Coboat has been an amazing journey and has always pushed the boundaries of technology and innovation. It is incredible how far we have come in just over six months since Tommy, James and Karsten dreamt up the idea sitting on a beach in Thailand.

We are a true start-up in the sense that every day the project becomes more challenging and this tests our adaptability. But we always rise to that challenge and find ways to do what needs to be done to move forward in order to make this project a reality.

It has been a truly passionate adventure, with each one of us giving our best to make it happen.

Having said this, we must admit that we have been a bit over optimistic about what we could achieve by the launch date that we had set for ourselves: November 28th.

Over the past few weeks we have learned that whilst some things can happen almost by magic, others take longer than planned. This is the way of the startup world especially when it comes to construction – as many of you probably have experienced yourselves. Our parts and equipment are coming from all over the world, the workers on the shipyard have experienced many unexpected challenges, such as the heavy rain in the last weeks, plus we already had a late start with the delivery from the Maldives in August. Alas, we are still moving strong and at a good pace regardless of the setbacks.

Our team in Phuket is working really hard but we are just watching our buffer melting away in the beginning of the high season. Right now it looks like we will not be ready in time to launch on November 28 as we had hoped. Which is a real shame but we feel that the boat should be ready to rock and roll and be as perfect as we can get it before launch date. There should be no compromises.

When will we be ready and how much will we be delayed? We will be better able to make an estimate in the middle of November. It could just be 1 or 2 weeks but to be on the safe side we are planning to move forward our schedule for 4 weeks.

This is as disappointing for our guests as it is for us. But we are confident that our community will understand and react in a positive way that supports our unique idea and venture. We’ve come this far together, after all!

We will soon reach out to our guests, scheduled for those first weeks, to find individual solutions for their bookings.
Nonetheless we are proud of the project, where we are today and want to thank our team and our supporters from all over the globe for your patience and trust in this really exciting and sometimes challenging project.

On Coboat we have a very small crew: A skipper, a chef and a community manager. Which means there is only room for one more to complete our team, that’s you: The deckhand. Your role is basically to assist both the skipper in operating and maintaining the boat and the chef in getting hungry coworkers fed. The Greatest Jobs on the Seven Seas.

UPDATE: We are not longer accepting applications.

Our deckhand job is one of the most important jobs on Coboat and encompasses a large array of skills, duties and responsibilities. Skills we are looking for beside from sailing experience:

In your covering letter, feel free to explain to us a potential system or hardware you might consider for such a challenge.

Before becoming deck crew on Coboat, applicants will be required to demonstrate experience and proficiency. If you do not have certifications, be sure to have a well-prepared resume with some similar verifiable work experiences to show plus references.

Coboat and jovoto are looking for the best idea to help make the very first “Made on Coboat” project a reality.

“If you had 100 days of inspiration, collaboration, and freedom on a coworking catamaran, what is the one dream project that you would work on?”

A question that is aimed at the motivation of every creative nomad and perfectly describes the spirit of the “Made on Coboat” initiative. People from all over the world are invited to apply for “Made on Coboat” with a chance to win 100 days on the coworking catamaran and therefore become the first creative, who makes her or his dream project a reality.

Turn your dream project into reality with 100 days of coworking, creative inspiration, and sailing the high seas.

Turn your dream project into reality with 100 days of coworking, creative inspiration, and sailing the high seas.

Coboat is an 82 feet retrofitted sailing catamaran and floating coworking space. Circumnavigating the globe and exploring uncharted waters, Coboat will be home and office for up to 20 digital nomads as they collectively set out on a sea-faring adventure combining life, work and play. Launching at the end of the year, Coboat will be the very first coworking space on the water. To celebrate the launch, Coboat is giving out a 3-month residency scholarship to one person that will create her or his dream project – Made on Coboat.

coboat_jovoto_big

In jovoto, the Berlin-based company that enables brands to crowdstorm new ideas, Coboat has the ideal partner to offer a perfect platform where applicants can showcase their idea to the community and jury.

“Picture yourself sailing around the world, surrounded by your dream team of digital nomads, change leaders and entrepreneurs. Everyone usually experiences the most productivity and inspiration while getting the ideal work/life balance.”, describes Gerald Schömbs, co-founder of Coboat, the experience on board the coworking catamaran. “Coboat is an opportunity to meet new friends, engage with likeminded people, travellers, and potential business partners. It is our way to give back to the world we live in and all profits go back to community projects within the areas we sail in. And we jumpstart everything with the “Made on Coboat” initiative that invites everyone to take part in this adventure.”

The landing page coboat.jovoto.com went live on Thursday, August 13th 2015. From now on, applicants are able to pitch their idea, whether it is their first movie, latest book plot, a new business idea, app or any other project. All registered users on jovoto.com will be able to vote for their favourite idea submissions until September 24th. The dialog between the participants and the creative community on jovoto is lively and open, thanks to jovoto’s commentary system that encourages interaction.

“Our mission since 2007 has been to unleash creative talent from so-called ‘traditional’ work environments. We all know what kills our own creativity: a rigid organizational structure, long working hours sitting at the same desk, little work/life balance, ideating always with the same people, and so forth.”, says Head of Marketing, Liz von Loewen of jovoto.

“What better way to embrace our core values, than by giving creative people worldwide the freedom and opportunity to be their creative selves and make their dreams come true? This is the opportunity of a lifetime and we couldn’t be happier to help provide our creative platform to make the first “Made on Coboat” dream project come true.”

A jury of seven members will decide for the winner of the “Made on Coboat” project. Among the seven jury members are the founder of Nextspace, Jeremy Neuner, as well as the founder of Copass, Eric van den Broek. The grand jury prize winner will receive 100 days of food and lodging, and the chance of a lifetime to sail around the world with other creative nomads aboard Coboat.

IMG_0292So now I am part of the Coboat crew. As co-founder. If I had known what I have gotten myself into I would not have done it in the first place. How many times have I said this before? Seems I have not been learning much from my experiences. Although I have quite some experience from starting and running a PR agency for 25 years, starting a social cause “Freunde fürs Leben” (suicide awareness campaign) 14 years ago and being partner and shareholder in a variety of companies and start-ups for more than 15 years.

Has it just been three months ago that I got on board of the Coboat team? Karsten told me about the idea in April when I reached out to him inquiring about a yacht charter in Sicily. But it was in May when the two of us met in Berlin, went to DNX conference and I had my first Skype call with Tommy and James who finally officially welcomed me as a partner. Later I learned that the Coboat idea had only been born on a beach in Koh Lanta two months before in March.

Much has happened in those three months …

I started working full time again.

Four years ago I quitted my desk job in the agency I had founded and have been transforming myself in business angel, photographer, traveller, sailor and digital nomad. You might as well call it semi-retired if you want. Suddenly I find myself working 10+ hours a day, 7 days per week. And I am enjoying every minute.

I became a yacht owner.

Together with Karsten I have bought an 82 feet catamaran which I haven’t seen so far in real life. And to be honest I have never seen a boat that size. 11745381_10205357049060486_5307885754010237585_nBut the flag registry from Vanuatu shows me as the owner of half of it. If you had told me four years ago when I started taking my first sailing course I would have called you a liar. Also I am a shareholder of a company in London and another one in Belize which we founded in the meantime (and will become the owner of the yacht in the end).

I find myself planning a route around the world and learning about high risk areas.

It’s great fun moving post-it stickers on a calendar saying “Maldives”, “Caribbean”, “Venice” and “Phuket”. We have been doing that for a few days in Berlin and I cannot get enough of it. If only my sailing instructor knew …

That was we we learned that the insurance refuses to cover our trip when we go past Somalia and through the Gulf of Aden. It’s called “High Risk Area” and we thought we can get through by traveling with a flotilla (accompanied by warships) before we learned that we cannot keep up with their speed of around 16-18 knots. So what are our options? (a) Hire armed guards and protect the boat with barbwire. (b) Go around Africa which would set us back 6-12 months. (c) Hop on a yacht carrier which would set us back 50.000$.

So far after having gone live 6 weeks ago we have

This is an amazing ride with so much positive energy and feedback. I cannot wait to get on board with our community. Let the journey begin!

Ahoy,
I’m Joachim, a half Norwegian — half Swedish speaking Finn. Right now my scope is to make Coboat the most epic adventure out there.
No doubt I’ll need help from other digital nomads who know where to go treasure hunting around the world, both at sea and ashore. Check out our planned route and let me know your little secret spots and activities along the way, I promise to share them. Actually, I’d prefer you joining Coboat and show me in person.
Some months ago I felt how my viking gene kicked in and ever since I’ve listened to the universe telling me to ditch the coffee shops and incubators, but instead hunt for real “treasures”. So I found Coboat while doing my digital nomad thing on a different boat adventure in the Baltic Sea region over the last couple of weeks.
Tommy, the designer and a long lost friend, started posting these insanely intriguing looking posts about this Coboat philosophy “Blue sea thinking”. Yep thats me, I thought and here I am.

Instantly I made a short video of my voyage as an introduction of myself, with only my phone as a tool due to scarcity of electricity. I thought “Tesla, help me now or I’ll never get aboard Coboat”. Having only ever used professional editing tools on a computer, I was amazed at what you could produce using only your phone and the right app.

Getting to know the team remotely is exciting and I just threw myself in and had a go, trying to make myself useful. We haven’t really met in person yet but they invited me to Berlin to join the DNX — Digital Nomad Conference, maybe I’ll meet you there as well?

My intuition says we need you on-board. So get in touch and let’s do this. I need to share some crazy ideas, so now would be perfect time to say “Hi”.
Over and out.

@UNIMUG

IMG_4389

What a crazy few months this has been. After meeting Tommy & Karsten at KoHub the Coboat evolved into something quite amazing. Gerald was the final piece to our puzzle and completed the team (remotely on Skype in true digital nomad fashion). We have never looked back.

Our team have now dispersed across the globe, I begrudgingly stayed here on the beach in Koh Lanta. Karsten is now in the amazing spiritual retreat that is Ubud. Tommy is back in Finland enjoying the long summer days. Gerald sailing on the lakes surrounding Berlin.

Despite the distance, the energy in the team is still intense and we are all very focused on a singular goal.

The last weeks I have been developing relations with coworking spaces and entrepreneurial communities around the world. I am arranging the beginnings of future collaborations in local regions we will pass through.

Our main aim is to engage in entrepreneurship with a heavy focus on social impact. We will also be hosting local conferences and events on the boat, the possibilities are endless.

The project is already attracting interest from like minded individuals and groups who really want to make a difference. Coboat has been so well received that I get very excited to imagine the potential of what we could achieve on our journey.

The Coboat community onboard will be given the chance to cowork with different regional projects as we cruise around the world. This will present some amazing entrepreneurial opportunities for those onboard who choose to join in. We really want to focus on the soul and the benefits of the coworking experience.

Coboat is just beginning and I can’t wait to see all of the possibilities unfold.

So if you are reading this and we are passing by (or just want to collaborate remotely) then don’t hesitate to get in touch and we can chat about potential synergies! [email protected]

Cheers,

James.

I’m both happy and proud to write this first blog post on the Coboat site! My name is Tommy, I am taking care of the website design and also a co-founder of Coboat.

It’s been a great ride so far and I feel very positive and motivated by the project, the team and partners, everybody has been very helpful and we’ve got great feedback as well.

It’s quite ironic that I’m sitting inside a small shed about 16m2, 20m from the sea, on the west coast of Finland doing this, technology is just awesome! Almost offgrid with the sauna and sea as my daily “shower”. It’s been quite cold and rainy since I returned home from Thailand one month ago, but I enjoy meeting up with friends and family and the bad weather helps me stay focused on work! =)

I am still working on the design of the Coboat website, working on details, developing new things and researching when I find time left over. And I am more than happy to get feedback from you on Coboat and feel free to contact me or the team anytime!

The Earlybirds vouchers are finally out! So check them out and don’t forget to sign up to our newsletter (in the footer) to stay connected with us!

See you around!
