Triumphing over the unexpected: Transforming a boat into a coworking space

In our last project update on the build we told you of the discovery of water in the hulls of our boat.

The inspection report came back and we have been gutted to learn that that the water has caused extensive damage! To repair or replace the hulls will take up to year.

This is not the news we wanted to hear but change brings opportunity and we will find a way.

Change brings opportunity…

It is safe to say that our project has experienced it’s ups and downs and now a year in we are excited by the new phase this project is in.

Whilst our boat is being reconstructed we are on the hunt for a suitable boat to charter in the interim, which will embark on a long term sail, exploring regions of the world with our community. (Do you know anyone with a boat? Spread the word!)

We have met so many awesome people along our journey, who are all just as passionate about Coboat as we are, and this has resulted in great partnerships.

Many coworking spaces and communities are valuable partners of Coboat and true to the spirit of coworking. They are always willing to share our mission and contribute ideas.

Coboat Pop-Up Events in 2016

This network of partnerships means we can bring the Coboat experience to coworking communities across the globe with Coboat pop-up events, starting with the very first one in Barcelona this September.

So during 2016, whether through partner events or a long term charter, we will begin to offer Coboat experience in different regions and will be launching our boat in 2017.

Like the sound of Barcelona?

We have teamed up with betahaus and Coworkation to bring you the very first coworkation sailing event, sailing around the Balearic islands on a flotilla of boats.

Explore, collaborate, innovate, meet other like-minded people to share in the first ever event of it’s kind.

I want to know when ticket sales are open. GREAT! Sign up to our newsletter below.

A Trash Hero wastes as little as possible, reuses as much as possible, and works to preserve and improve the spaces they are in, wherever they may be.

We are so proud to be able to share the news of our collaboration with Trash Hero! The Trash Hero mission is to create sustainable, community-based projects that remove existing waste, and reduce future waste by inspiring long-term behaviour change. With the support of local businesses, people come together once a week to pick up trash. As of September 15, 2015, 5’000 volunteers have removed 100 metric tons of garbage from the beaches of Thailand and Indonesia. Trash Hero also focus on community waste management, local school education and have a bottles and bags programme.

To help reduce the amount of plastic bottles that end up on the beaches, and in the sea, Trash Hero sells stainless steel water bottles to local businesses (at no profit to Trash Hero). Local businesses can then sell those bottles to customers – but only if the local business agrees to have a refill station that provides anyone with a Trash Hero water bottle, no matter where the bottle was purchased, with unlimited free drinking water.

Trash Hero

So guess what water bottles Coboaters will be drinking out of when sailing with us? Yes, our very own Trash Hero Coboat stainless steal bottles!

We are really looking forward to supporting the Trash Hero mission, as we sail around the world on our very own mission to rid the seas of pollution. See pictures from our recent beach clean ups here.

We cannot sail the oceans and ignore the pollution that surrounds us. Ocean pollution is now one of the biggest threats facing our planet. So we are taking action using the power of the Coboat platform and community. Click the link to read about how we can contribute to the fight against ocean pollution.

Inspired by Trash Hero Thailand, last month saw the Coboat team’s very first own beach cleanup at “our beach” (5 min. ride from Coboat Village) which was recently named “Phuket’s dirtiest beach”. After 1,5 hours and not even 1 kilometer on this 10 kilometer long beach all our 12 rubbish bags where filled with plastic, flip flops and Styrofoam blown ashore from the ocean.

We also took action on our recent team sailing trip. Hundreds of long tail boats arrived throughout the day bringing party goers and tourists to this small idyllic snorkeling spot. To the distant eye “Loh Samah Bay” right on the opposite side of the world famous “Beach” of Ko Phi Phi Leh seems like paradise. The Coboat team took a closer look and what we saw when we went ashore was far removed from paradise: piles of rubbish brought in by the ocean on this uninhabited, tiny 50 meter hidden beach. So we took action, grabbed all the bin bags we had on the boat, filled every bag, collected as much as our dingy could carry and brought it over to the main island’s pier.

The momentum to clean the oceans is building, and if you too want to support our mission, say no to plastic bags, bottles and straws. Follow our friends from Trash Hero Thailand and Parley for the Oceans and join one of their events.

Last week marked a major milestone in the boat build project and it has been epic! The mast and boom have been taken down (in boat speak this is called stepping the mast) and we are now entering the next phase having completed the build of the internal infrastructure. This means that the cabins, beds, bathrooms and storage structures are built. The extension of the deck area at the back of the boat is complete and the work to expand the salon area is also complete.

The process of removing the mast and boom took just over 4 hours in total and involved twelve people. We’ve put together a video to share the process with you. Check it out.

What happens next with the project?
Coboat goes undercover as a huge tent will be constructed over her. We recently discovered water in the hulls so they need to be thoroughly inspected to establish if any damage has occurred. Our timescale on other tasks is very much dependent on what we discover here.

Hanoi’s coworking scene is starting up and growing rapidly. It seems that there is a thriving entrepreneurial spirit in Vietnam prompting the question, ‘could Vietnam be the next Silicon Valley?’. Coboat met with Toong, Hanoi Hub and Hatch to learn more about the trend and the role the coworking spaces are playing.

The founders are young and ambitious and refuse to accept that the coworking space model does not have potential in Vietnam. The startup scene and coworking trends go hand in hand and certainly seem to be driven by the Millennials. Despite facing cultural and financial challenges, they are determined to establish coworking as the norm, as well as to support their peers to develop the next ground breaking technology solution or social enterprise.

Each space has a rapidly growing membership base which goes to show that the Vietnamese are increasingly seeking something that offers more than the traditional work path. All three spaces launched in mid 2015 and within only a few months all are embarking on expansion plans. This week Toong announced it has raised a ‘seven digit’ USD funding round from undisclosed investors. They say that the new funds will be used to continue to develop the coworking space model ‘deeply and sustainably’ in Vietnam. This year HATCH! aims to expand its activities within three main areas: Ecosystem Building, Co-Working Space and Incubation.

With these mindsets in the driving seat, it is clear why Vietnam could be crowned the next Silicon Valley. Starting up any new business takes bravery, a willingness to invest all one has in their beliefs, and against all the odds do whatever it takes to make ideas become reality. That is exactly what these founders are doing.

But more than that, they want to inspire their peers to do the same, and so their mission is to provide the space, the support networks and above all prove, through leadership, that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. The ultimate goal of each space is to connect people internationally providing a physical platform for like minded creatives to connect, collaborate and transform ideas into businesses.

For those of you currently ‘nomadding’ around the area we recommend you check out these three coworking spaces. Here’s some information about them below.

24846499243_204ed3e0ad_k 25353910532_e2a41db67f_k 25292802135_0c69d1cb23_k

Toong is set in one of the preserved antique French villas of the city. It spans two floors which houses space for interactive coworking, meeting rooms, ‘ideation’ areas, quiet spaces, workshops plus a games room and a bar. The space also doubles as an art gallery, regularly exhibiting pieces from local artists.

Every Friday Toong runs workshops which coach and mentor it’s members on their startups. The goal is to increase the success rate of each startup. They have recognised that there is a lack of skills and experience in developing these ideas into successful businesses. The Toong Failhub invites members to learn valuable lessons from those who didn’t succeed.

Look out for their second space which is located by the West Lake and a third will open in Ho Chi Minh City later this year.

HATCH! NEST began as an idea between a group of friends in their 4th year at university and despite a lack of funding they have steadily built up their community since the summer of 2015. The space serves as information centres for entrepreneurs and freelancers, startups and interested organisations.

In October 14-15 HATCH! NEST will host it’s annual startup conference and exhibition in Ho Chi Minh City. HATCH! Fair is a startup and technology event bringing together 1000’s of people from all over the world.

Hanoihub is designed to be home from home and has hosted over 700 entrepreneurs and freelancers since opening. The space offers an open office, creative team meeting office, quiet spaces and a living room where members can take a break and network.

They regularly run workshops about careers and technology, actively connect members with founders of other startups, freelancers in code, development and design, marketing and angel investors. Your chance to meet these freelancers and investors is at the Hanoihub Happy Hour. Check out their facebook page for the latest promotional offers.
