Week two of our Mediterranean leg led us through more Greek islands, one more beautiful than the next. New members joining us on the boat were Markus, Sara and Doug, together with competition winner Stefan and Cat, who extended for another week.

This week kicked off with some great idea incubators, discussions, idea creation and skill shares. Yet again, having a diverse crew on Coboat led to invaluable input on all fronts. Supplemented by bonding, laughing and swimming with the unicorn, this week was a huge overall success.

Ideas pitched throughout the week ranged from a platform for budding aviators by Markus, a refreshed take on raincoats and dog blogs by Sara, a skill share of Kickstarter for successful campaigns and a presentation of Doug’s business, Minaal.

The first mandatory stop was Assos, where last week’s crew fell in love with the landscape, the castle, the town and the crystal clear waters in the harbour. It was only too clear that next day’s session would be held in the castle, where, after a short hike to an amazing view, the crew shared breakfast and heard about Doug’s most recent ideas in perhaps one of the most inspirational locations in Greece.

After a short stop in Fiscardo, Coboat headed to Meganisi, where after a short swim, we found a nice little bar. We also found the best cat and quickly named him Saganaki for his ginger and white fur and the idea of taking on a new crew member (a boat cat) was very nearly realised had it not been for one veto (looking at you, Gerald!).

Wednesday we docked in Lefkada to make some more repairs (neverending story on a yacht) and stocked up on supplies and souvenirs after an inspirational session on the Coboat mission to keep the ocean clean and to avoid using plastic.

The last swim stop before reaching our final destination was Antipaxos with its Carribean like beaches and light blue water. Here, the crew wrapped up their last sessions and gave valuable input on the Coboat project and its current challenges. As points of view differ vastly between the diverse crew members, discussions such as these always give vital new perspectives on situations.

Thank you to all crew members and we hope to see you again soon!

This week we set off again from Athens. The first leg of our journey was a very Greek-infused experience. Activities included an unforgettable drive through the Corinth Canal, a visit to Delphi, which was once considered the centre of the world, and many, many amazing bays and beaches. Cat, one of the Coboaters, even extended her stay for another week to experience more of Greece, sailing and the coworking atmosphere on Coboat.

55 Minutes: Career Design Workshop

Another one of our guests was contest winner Stefan Bielski, who started his first week of four on Coboat. Stefan’s workshops gave the group valuable insight into career changes and the importance of empathy and knowing oneself. Visiting Delphi was a perfect fit for these discussions.

55 Minutes – Career Design Workshop by Stefan Bielski inspired by Albert Einstein’s quote: “If I had an hour to solve a problem I’d spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about solutions.”

Learning about Greek Culture

We were also lucky to host Helen, a Greek travel journalist, and Carlo, a photographer, on board. In one of our first sessions, we learned a huge amount about Greek culture, the challenges facing Greece today and the reasons why Helen originally fell in love with it. Having a Greek couple on board also made our plans much easier. We learned so much about food, music and Greek mentality.

Coboaters hiked up to Delphi, ancient Greece’s most important oracle.

Uni

The island of Ithaca was another first for Coboat as we introduced the group to Uni, the coolest inflatable unicorn in all of the Ionian sea! Cat and Jacob quickly used her to paddle over to a superyacht in our bay to put some Coboat stickers on its side (much to the dismay of the crew). You could say we invented a whole new way of marketing Coboat to the elites 🙂

"Brand Awareness"

“Brand Awareness”

We fell in love with the village of Assos, had a magical sail through a 70m high canal with light blue water and we beach hopped. We ate lots of incredible food, prepared by our own chef as well as experiencing various restaurants and tavernas.  Many skills were shared, challenges defined, ideas were had and decisions were made.

A huge thank you to all the Coboaters for their ideas, input and sharing – it was truly a spectacular seven days and we hope to see you all again soon.

To coboat or not to coboat?

Lately I’ve been writing a lot about workations and other digital nomad events, because I find their potential and outcome to be amazing. In just a few days, you manage to connect with people, create new friendships, get feedback on your projects and learn new skills.

This time, the workation was Coboat: a unique experience, considering we were on a catamaran sailing through the Greek islands.

It took me a while to decide what would be more interesting for you to find out from this article. Moreover, how can I capture everything that happened? But I wanted to focus on what would be useful for you. Well, here it is.

A typical day on Coboat

There is no such thing. Each of the seven days spent on the boat was different and no matter how much you wanted to plan things out, there were too many aspects that could dictate the course of day. The plan was pre-made by the Coboat team, which did a great job mixing time on land with sailing among the beautiful islands of Greece, while co-working, having workshops and idea incubator sessions. However, nothing is settled when you are on the sea. Sometimes the wind and sun are the ones dictating the arrival time, sun bathing sessions and working hours. But because I am pretty sure you are interested in what we did and how we spent our time on Coboat, I’ll sum up our journey.

Coboat Day 1: Lemnos – Lesvos

We started our sailing trip with an adventure. My first day wasn’t exactly the first for everyone, since the ferryboat that was supposed to get me there on time had some problems and I only got on the Coboat at midnight, when almost everyone else was already sleeping. My first day was, therefore, mostly spent on sea. We left Lemnos to head to the beautiful island of Lesvos.

We were on the boat for around nine hours and we encountered quite a few new sensations. The boat also rocked for a few hours and now I can finally say that I know how that feels too. So if i were to pick the worst day of the trip, it would be that first day, but it really wasn’t that bad.

Every journey is different and provides interesting memories.

Coboat Day 2: Lesvos (Petra) – Lesvos (Mytilini)

If you think Coboat is just an experience on sea, that’s a wrong assumption. It’s a great mix between being on the water, co-working, co-living, but also getting to see different places and meeting interesting people.

When we got to Lesvos, we went to one of the most amazing co-working and co-living spaces – Birds Bay – it has the Greek touch and feel and a mesmerizing view. Take a look or get in touch with Digital Nomads Lesvos, if you want to find out more about spending some time on this Greek island.

instagram post

We worked for a few hours, enjoyed the silence of the place but also took a couple of breaks to test out the infinity pool. I don’t plan too much in advance, so I am not sure about my future destinations, but Birds Bay made it to my “must-return-to” list. If I ever decide to write the book I’ve been thinking about, this could be the place I’ll do it in. The old and new  are combined with a view that is able inspire and relax anyone.

Coboat Day 3: Lesvos – Psara

Another day of sailing began, but this time the weather and waves were perfect. We left Lesvos and headed to an island with only 300-400 inhabitants. On route, we had time to work on our projects by ourselves, but we also had a skills-sharing session and an idea incubator one.

If you associate Greece with Mykonos or Santorini, Psara is nowhere close to the other famous Greek islands. it is a quiet island with welcoming people that inspire authentic Greek hospitality.

Coboat Day 4: Psara – Mykonos

We started sailing towards the Mykonos island early in the morning. It is a place we were all excited to get to experience.

So, as we were sailing, we also got the chance to talk about how stress can turn into creativity and to work for a little bit, as much as the waves allowed us to stare into a laptop screen.

The day ended great when we went up the hill in Mykonos to have a drink, relax and enjoy the amazing view we had in front of us.

Coboat Day 5: Mykonos

instagram postThis day was entirely dedicated to exploring Mykonos and working out of cafés, restaurants and the Coboat. And you really have to explore the place: at each new corner you can find something unexpected. Moreso, if you are into brands (even though most nomads are not), you will be surprised to spot luxury brands next to a simple house or a fast-food place.

However, the skills share and incubator sessions weren’t left out of the Coboaters schedule.

This time it was my turn and I can tell you that with the help of their feedback, I managed to have a clear vision about how OFFice To Travel will grow. ? You will see it pretty soon.

This was also the day when two of the members, Sophie and Eric from Copass, had to leave and we were pretty sad, but managed to have fun up to the last moment.

Coboat Skills Share session

Coboat Day 6: Mykonos – Paros

Twitter postAfter so much time on land, we had to sail again. This time, for Paros. Working, sharing skills and talking about our ideas were once again part of the schedule. And since these were the last days on Coboat, we had to make the best out of them.

When the night came, Coboat and DNomad.Club sailing retreat boats met and had a great time making a barbecue, talking and sharing thoughts about the sailing experience.

Coboat Day 7: Time to say goodbye

Oh, this must’ve been the hardest moment. For seven days we shared almost everything and we managed to feel like a community. It was difficult to say goodbye, but nothing lasts forever, right?

The vibe

Sometimes, working and living in the same place with another group of people can be exhausting. People have different routines, desires and diets. It can be hard, even with friends, to spend almost 24/7 together. But it always depends on the people. This time, like many other times, the people were amazing. That’s why, for attending some digital nomad events you need to have one or more interviews with the organizers; just to make sure the people connect and the vibe will be good for everyone. These were our guidelines, and since we all agreed, we had a great time.

Screen Shot 2016-07-14 at 16.42.48

Co-working

I worked less than I wanted to work, sometimes by will, other times just because I had to obey to wind. And I can’t say I regret it even a bit. It’s a pity not to enjoy the whole experience, the sailing part, connecting with people, sharing your skills and getting new ideas. There were times when I decided to work, but the waves made me shut off my laptop really quickly and just enjoy the ride. Even though I don’t usually get seasick, staring at a screen when everything around you moves can make you go soak up the sun.

It’s not only about working separately at the same table (or on the deck), but also about helping each other and sharing skills. And Coboat facilitated that for us. Almost every day we had sessions of skills sharing and idea incubators. Each of us got the chance to get relevant feedback on what we are working.

Idea Incubator session

Idea Incubator session

Co-living:

Living on a boat can have its disadvantages. So if you’ve never been on a longer sailing trip, which was also my case, take into consideration that you won’t be able to take 30 minutes showers or waste electricity, but you’d be surprised to see how easy it is to adapt. All these things made the experience even “more unique” (yes, I know, dear fellow grammar freaks) and sometimes made me step out of my comfort zone.

When people who you are sharing a home with are not quality people, especially when most of the times there is no cafe to run to or take a walk, maybe only jump into the water, things can go wrong. Here it was the opposite. Coboaters, both the crew and the guests, made everything even better.

Community

I could not say it clearer than this: they were amazing. Among the people on the Coboat, you might know Eric and Sophie, founders of Copass, Barbara from Barbaralicious, Adrian from DeDrum and Christian from… Christian, I am looking forward to your new project. Also, the crew was exceptional. I will miss Jacob’s cooking, Kim and Becky’s positive vibe and pro-activity and our skipper’s preparations for sailing to the next islands.

Oh, yeah, in a few days we managed to get an anthem of the week. ?

The place(s)

Facebook postYou might not be able to get on the same itinerary on the Coboat anytime soon, since they are choosing different parts of the world every time, but sailing between the Greek islands was a great experience: from Psara’s local vibe (with only a few hundred inhabitants) to the posh Mykonos, we had a blast discovering new places. One thing is sure: you cannot get bored on the Coboat.

As a conclusion and advice: if you like having an all-inclusive trip, relax, not care about the world anymore and just sun bathe, do yourself a favour and book a trip from a travel agency. But if you want to have a great time, connect, get ideas, explore, co-work, co-live, step out of your comfort zone and make new friends, Coboat is definitely the place to be.

Week 28 Coboaters are; Becky, Liloo, Theo, Karsten, Jacob, Eleni, Jennifer and the man behind the camera, Gerald.

The idea slapping continued during this week, as we left Paros and headed to Lavrion in Athens. As usual we kicked off the week with a round of introductions and expectation sharing and we were joined by a few of the previous weeks guests, Lucinda, Heather and Craig.

And this is where the magic started happening. During this first session ideas were swapped, connections made and future collaborations identified.

Kicking off week 28 and connections are immediately formed.

As the boat needed some maintenance work we were able to spend more time in Naoussa, Paros, giving us more chance to explore this beautiful harbour town.

Naoussa – home for a couple of days.

Ideas, ideas and more ideas

This week’s awesome outcomes? New ideas, new connections and new perspectives. Idea incubators included:

Skill shares

During the first afternoon sailing, Coboater Eleni shared the mission of her Healing Lesvos project.

From blank pages to pages filled with ideas – this is what we call idea slapping. Jenny, founder of Digital Nomad Girls leaves Coboat feeling inspired.

Theo’s idea incubator served to clear his head as he is embarking on an ambitioius project on Tinos. The community helped him to put things in to perspective.

For Lilou, this collaborative environment was new to her but she benefited hugely from her idea incubator. The feedback she received gave her the willing to carry on and with lots of news ideas to grow her business.

Film nights

Film nights on Coboat were introduced and it’s probably one of the best places ever to watch a film! Unashamedly, the crew and Jennifer became obsessed with new reality t.v. series, Below Deck, which provided endless entertainment, as we made comparisons to life on board boats.

We did also squeeze in some educational viewing don’t worry. Gerald shared a documentary on the Jetlagged Biorock reef project, regenerating coral reef using electricity and Eleni shared a preview to a new documentary about Athens and the stray dogs which inhabit the city.

With a new projector screen we were able to host film nights on board

Eleni, Liloo, Theo, Jennifer and special guests Craig, Heather and Lucinda, thank you for making Coboat another amazing experience this week. Keep us posted on your projects and looking forward to a reunion week in 2017.

Week 27 Coboaters

Week 27 Coboaters: Ian, Lucinda, Stella, Angelique, Sara, Heather and Craig

Week 27 was all about bonding, laughing (and we laughed A LOT) and being tested. We sailed from Paros to Ios before exploring the volcanic region of Santorini (unfortunately not getting to climb the volcano as there wasn‘t anywhere suitable for us to dock), then from Santorini to Keros via Ios again, before returning to Paros.

Yet again our route was determined by the weather, we encountered a few days of wind and choppy short waves and our boat decided to throw us a few challenges too. In true Coboat style though our community adapted very well, had buckets of positive energy and brilliant senses of humour. Our tummy muscles are better off for it!

Our Coboaters this week had buckets of number two

Our Coboaters this week had buckets of number two.

We never cease to be amazed at the generosity of people to help their fellow Coboaters with their ideas and challenges. This week was no different and skill share and idea incubators included:

Craig guiding us in setting up a business in a new way

Craig guiding us in setting up a business in a new way. We became a Board of Directors in one morning.

Angelique‘s session on connection when working remotely: Stella is explaining the relationships with her team in Uganda and the challenges she faces with the distance.

Every week we invite the community to learn about our ocean pollution mission and we had some great outcomes this week. Lucinda, Craig, Angelique and Stella were all able to offer introductions to projects and people related to ocean projects, which we could potentially support. We can never underestimate the power of our community – you just never know what one conversation will lead to!

True friendships were formed and strengthened this week and we will all meet again for a reunion week in 2017. Although, there will be some meet ups in between we are sure! A huge thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

This week we welcomed a bunch of amazing minds on board for our sail from Lemnos to Paros. One of this week’s Coboaters was Eric van den Broek, photographer and Cofounder at copass.org. Naturally, we wanted to put his amazing talent to good use so the adventures of this week come to you through his eyes lense!

This week's Coboaters ready to set sail

Coboaters ready to set sail

Day one of this week didn’t quite go according to plan, with less that smooth sailing on the route from Lemnos to Lesvos. On the plus side, Coboat has officially been “christened” and one of this week’s guests will forever hold the much-sought-after “first person ever to be sick sick on Coboat” title (can you guess who from the fresh faces above?!).

Well, mother nature had other plans for us on our first day!

Mother nature had other plans for us on our first day!

Our Coboaters quickly learned that as sailors we are always at the mercy of mother nature, and sometimes she doesn’t want to cooperate. But after the wet and wild adventures of day one, day two definitely made up for it as we arrived at the beautiful Island of Lesvos.

Coboaters were invited to spend the day at Bird’s Bay Coworking space, home of Digital Nomads Lesvos (DNL). DNL founder, Eleni Atsikbasis, gave us a warm welcome at the breathtaking location which features an infinity pool, superfast internet and on-site accommodation; everything a nomad needs to stay productive in paradise.

Wow, that view!

Coboaters spent the day working away as well as finding time to make a splash in the pool.

That evening we invited Eleni on board as we sailed to the south of the island and spent a night on anchorage under the stars. Sailing to new destinations and meeting with the wider coworking community is a huge positive of having a mobile Coworking space, and we’re very glad to be able to make new friends at each of our destinations.

Thankfully, the rest of the week was smooth sailing, and we drew on the diverse and bright minds of our Coboaters in a number of onboard sessions. Each and every Coboater has a unique background, skill and career experience, and we ensure our community can take full advantage of this learning in our Skill Share Sessions. A few of the sessions on board this week included:

Each of our guests also has the opportunity to present a project they are currently working in our ‘Idea Incubator’ sessions. Getting the input of other Coboaters helps to focus on where to go next , how to improve, as well as gain valuable tips and tricks from others on board. In one session our guest Barbara confessed she had felt thoroughly ‘idea slapped’ (in a good way) by all the great feedback given to her for her project, LoveYourDigitalNomad.

After spending an evening on the quant Island of Psara– home to just 300 people!– we headed south towards the infamous Island of Mykonos. Coboaters spent the day exploring its quant streets before heading for sundowner drinks at 180 Degrees, an amazing bar perched above the town with one-of-a-kind views of the Island.

It’s not goodbye… it’s see you later!

Written by Kim Hobson, Coboat Community Manager

This week we’re still riding high on the wave of our successful first week at sea! We were sad to bid farewell to our very first batch of Coboaters, but it was an honour to share such a momentous week in Coboat history with them.

Team Training

This week was a little different, dedicated entirely to team training with no guests on board. We spent 7 days getting to know each other even better, and ensuring everyone has completed their Coboat training– from learning new knots to safety procedures.

Sailing North

After hosting a the first-ever Coboat Sunset Cruise, which was a resounding success, the next day we bid farewell to our friends over at the Lemnos Camp and set sail to new horizons. We headed North, towards the Island of Samothraki.

Coboat bids farewell to the Lemnos Camp and sets sail into the horizon.

Our sailing book describes Samothraki as: “ ..a forbidding looking place…Samothraki was regarded as a sacred island and a sanctuary for initiates of the cult…” Not at all ominous! But Coboat is all about adventure and new horizons, so we couldn’t wait to see what lie in store.

The island is home to the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, celebrated throughout Ancient Greece for its Mystery religion, so after mooring we set off on in search of it via bike. Unfortunately, we’re still getting used to Greek siesta time, and the fact that everything closes between 3pm and 7pm. Arriving to find the Sanctuary closed, we went for plan B, a dip in the Ocean and an ice cold beer–a different kind of sanctuary but still a good one!

Knot, Knot…

Under the guidance of expert sailors, Karsten and Gerald, we all undertook sailor training throughout the week. We practiced tying all sorts of essential knots, and how to properly fix and release ropes together as a team when mooring in harbour.

Out on the Ocean, who should we see again, but more dolphins. They’re fast becoming honorary members of the Coboat team. This is the 5th sighting in under 8 days.

This little dolphin briefly forgot how to dolphin. Although we’re definitely down with his unique jumping style.
Taking some inspiration from this little guy, we found out that Coboater, Jacob,  never learnt to dive properly. So there was some less formal training….

Learning to dive on Coboat

Karsten tries to teach Jacob how to dive. What followed were a lot of belly flops.

We also spend time planning for the week ahead ready for the next group of Coboaters to come on board.

Kim and Jacob work on the menu and activity plan for guests.

Later in the week we headed back to Myrina in Lemos where we would meet the next group of guests. We spent a magical evening on anchorage under a beautiful Strawberry moon near the town.

Strawberry Moon

Under a full moon and in the shadow of Myrina’s Byzantine fort….can you imagine a better way to welcome the first day of summer?

After a week of getting to know each other better, we’d love to get to know you better too, so why not introduce yourself in the comments below?

The week in numbers
